What Is a
Comprehensive Eye Exam?

A comprehensive eye exam is an in-depth assessment of your visual clarity and eye health. We examine how well you can see and check the health of your eyes, looking for potential problems that could affect your vision. This includes evaluating your eye muscles, eye pressure, and retinal health to detect any underlying conditions that need attention.

Is it the Same as a Vision Screening?

No. Vision screenings are basic tests performed in schools or during a routine physical that quickly assess whether you need corrective lenses. While they can be helpful, the scope is limited. A comprehensive eye exam includes a detailed assessment of your eye health and can uncover issues like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, which a screening would not detect.

What Complete
Eye Exams Can Detect:

  • Refractive errors (like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism)
  • Glaucoma (a condition that damages the optic nerve)
  • Cataracts (clouding of the lens, which affects your vision)
  • Macular degeneration (a leading cause of vision loss in older adults)
  • Diabetic retinopathy (eye damage caused by diabetes)
  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Strabismus (misalignment of the eyes)
  • Amblyopia (also known as lazy eye)

How Often Do You
Need an Eye Exam?

The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) provides specific guidelines on the recommended frequency of comprehensive eye exams for different age groups.

Adults Aged 20 to 64

For adults between the ages of 20 and 64, the CAO recommends undergoing a comprehensive eye examination every two years. Regular eye exams in this age group are crucial for detecting early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

Adults Aged 65 and Older

Adults aged 65 and older should have a comprehensive eye examination annually.

As we age, the risk of developing eye conditions that can impair vision increases. Annual eye exams are vital for early detection and management of age-related eye diseases, ensuring that any changes in vision or eye health are promptly addressed.

Children

Infants and toddlers should have their first eye exam between the ages of six and nine months.

Preschool children (ages two to five) should have at least one eye examination during this period, and school-age children (ages six to 19) should undergo an eye examination annually. Early eye examinations are crucial for detecting vision problems that can affect a child's development and learning. Conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes) can be effectively treated if identified early.

Adhering to these guidelines can help individuals of all ages maintain good eye health and prevent vision problems.

The Vision
Technology We Use

We believe that providing the best care means using the most advanced technology. Our eye exams include state-of-the-art diagnostic tools such as:

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): This non-invasive imaging test provides high-resolution images of the retina, helping us detect conditions like macular degeneration and glaucoma early.

Optomap Imaging: This advanced technology provides a wide-angle view of your retina, capturing more than 80% of the retinal surface in one image. It helps us detect early signs of retinal tears, macular degeneration, and more without the need for pupil dilation.

Visual Field Testing: This test measures your peripheral vision and helps detect any vision loss or blind spots that could indicate glaucoma, brain tumors, or other neurological issues. It’s a critical part of a comprehensive eye exam to ensure your entire visual field is healthy
